I just picked up an old Coffee Grinder that was re-painted black, the original red w/ a few gold accents color is still pretty sound under the newer paint. The question is-is there a mild enough Stripper that would hopefully gently take off just the top new coat ?
Could be a longshot-but I know someone out there's faced this prob before. Thanks !

Pure acetone, (not nail varnish remover)
Try wiping a bit with a cotton bud and see how it goes.

    Ventilation is a must.

Thanks davey- Got some out in the garage. Re the ventilation, absolutely-knocked me on my butt once (back to the 60's !).

I was a counselor in Project Brotherhood (Headstart ) back then- we caught 3-4 kids huffing plastic model glue in a breezeway 10 feet from the classroom.
Thank God there was no fentanyl back when !

Tricky one. You can't guarantee whatever you use on the top coat won't strip away the original. If any of the original is exposed try different solvents on both layers to see if something will attack the black but leave the red alone. Start with mild and build up. If the black stuff is water based, a good soak in water might help lift it. IMO acetone will likely take everything off it. I've had a few bad experiences with it.

    Acetone just eats things.

Hope not - it's also carcinogenic.
