I was thinking it looked like a stylized shamrock but it could be some other plant. There are three leaved plants with triangular leaves so could be one of those. I don't know Killarney ware either but it kept showing up.

It's a "K" according to my mom's old calligraphy book.

Those are shamrocks. I'd vote Irish.

The exterior appears to be burl walnut veneer. Agree with the satinwood for the inlay. Base wood looks to be pine. The interior lining looks like maple or maybe beech.

So many different kinds of wood in such a small box! I was wondering about the veneer. Thanks as always for the illumination.

    Beautiful box.
Do you think the knob could be a replacement?
The rest of the hardware looks like brass, but the knob looks silvery, and a little out of place for the style of the box.

Good point. Looks large for the box and not sure that it would need a knob at all.

Thanks so much verybrad. Wow! That is a lot of different woods. Do you know how old it is by any chance?

Thanks. I'm not sure. I haven't received the box yet. The ebay seller accepted my offer yesterday and just shipped it today. As soon as it arrives I will be able to look it over better.

As soon as the box arrives, I will take more photos and post them here. Believe it or not, I liked the box the most because I thought the little knob was pretty. I know nothing about wooden boxes and thought it belonged there, but now I am questioning it. I can't wait to get it and look at it even more now.

Hard saying how old this is. Would think at least early 20th century but could be several decades earlier. The hinges look like they could be replacements so not a lot of clues there.

Thanks verybrad. When the box arrives I will post more pictures and maybe we can all look at it together to check out to see what other clues there are. I appreciate your info and am so grateful for your comments. This forum has very nice people who are extremely helpful. I think you all are so awesome!

I was just looking at the Ebay seller's pictures again. Maybe I am seeing things, but I think I see some writing on the box. Do you guys notice it too? It is to the left of the yellow arrow. It is probably just some dirt, but maybe this is another clue. When I get it, I will take my magnifier/loupe and see if maybe that is a maker's mark or logo. BOX CLOVERS 7.jpg

It’s hard for me to see closely enough but maybe the veneer is tortoise.I see a tiny chip at the rim top of the bottom piece. That’s why I’m thinking veneer

Hi and thanks for your reply. When you say tortoise, do you mean tortoiseshell veneer? Do you think it could be fake (faux) or real tortoiseshell veneer?

I am not saying your are wrong because I know nothing about this box, but in person it really looks and feels like wood, but then again I have no clue what tortoiseshell feels or looks like in person, lol.

Hi. It's me again. When I received the box, I made a new post about it with better photos. Here is a link to see those pictures:

Do you think it is tortoise veneer now? It looks more like wood to me, but I am not very knowledgeable about any of these sort of things. Thanks for your help by the way.
