Featured What do I have here? Dress clip w/floral decoration

Seller told me "Bakelite", I was going to get it either way as price was very low. Figured might be more interesting if it wasn't Bakelite in this particular case. Simichrome test inconclusive, but haven't really checked it too hard. It seems like it might be some kind of plastic or similar.

It reminds me of Calico's piece from the thread below(by the way, haven't seen Calico in a bit, hope all is well ). Mine is sort of riveted on in the same way, but I think mine some kind of brass or base metal.

I realize one pearl is missing. Should I just call this a dress clip or are there other key words anyone can suggest?

 

Well, it sure looks like a dress clip to me. May or may not be bakelite but it looks worth testing. And yes, that floral overlay is reminiscent of the piece that Calico posted. I did do some googling but didn't really find anything very similar. I like it!

 

Thanks Wenna. With the keyword floral overlay (thank you!) found a slightly similar dress clip with the same color bakelite, different style overlay w/rivets on Etsy. I don't think mine is worth the asking price of this one, but this one has some similar aspects.

I should be able to better test the material tomorrow. Usually I can tell Bakelite from a mile away, and when I can't, the rubbing test never fails me. However I had this in an unheated room, and need to bring it inside for a better test.

I suppose there is no hope for the tarnish on the metal, right? I tried a sunshine cloth but it didn't do much.

 

Have you tired Simichrome? This stuff is pretty awesome.
