He is a Daruma - one of my first posts here: Feedback on Ittoburi Daruma Doll

Japanese ittobori Daruma okimono, c. unknown. The doll expresses the feelings of the little priest who, after meditating intensely for nine years, wakes up to find his arms and legs have atrophied.

With inlaid bone eyes and hand-carved in the Ittobori or raw “One Cut” style characteristic of Hida School. Although unsigned, the choice of three-toned Matsu Daruma with soul-patch, subtle speckling and finely brushed surface reflect choices made by a skilled artist.

Google ceramic daruma doll - Daruma are depicted in various states of awareness, I guess - some are robed, like yours, and you can't tell about the arms - but the expression is the same. Here's one on Worthpoint from 2012 that sold for $89

Don't forget to take a photo of mark, too - I'm curious what it looks like.

Those characters don't look like any Japanese ones I have seen. I wonder if the picture shows them upside down? Or maybe some kind special script? Or maybe Korean?

@Mat Can you help with the marking in post #9?

    You mean your figure, specifically?

Try etsy - you'll see a wide variety of daruma - the red ones are for goals - you paint one eye when you start and then the other when completed. Again, there's a very wide variety!

Yes, calling on @Mat , please!

I literally let out an, "ohhhh..." That's so great! Damn, girl! (?)

Looks like the same mark - texture and shape of the feet on the base, too. Just has more patina, which is pretty!

As Scouts said, it is Daruma Daishi (Bodhidharma), the Buddhist teacher who founded Chan Buddhism in China, which became Zen in Japan. But not the atrophied version.:) Maybe he recovered. He is portrayed with large, bulging eyes because he is said to have cut off his eyelids so he wouldn't fall asleep during his quest for enlightenment.
    This looks better, doesn't it:

Japan has different script styles, and sometimes it is written in such a way it almost looks Korean.
