another UW mark, the seller refers to it as Wong Lee

we had a conversation about two months ago re: these asian, modern marks. This one comes with the dishwasher warning and what I guess is a lot of fake crazing. Just another one to add to the knowledge base...

 

It is indeed a Wong Lee piece, and the 1895 date stands for the end of the Sino-Japanese war, a century before the company was founded in 1995:

In general, Chinese have a much stronger sense of history than many people in the West.

There is a difference between fake crazing and a style-related craquelure or crackle.
Since this item has a recent mark, and you say it comes with a dishwasher warning, it is clear that this craquelure is style-related, and not intended to fake. Besides, even if people believe this was made in 1895, surely they can't believe that such extreme crazing occurs in a little over a century.

Sunday, don't get me wrong, I think it is good that you warn against fakes. But China probably exports millions of household ceramics a year, and it is impossible to include those in fakes warnings.

 

This was never intended to fake anyone out. It's modern with a modern mark, and sold just for "pretty".

I prefer to call them imitations or reproductions of older pieces for the decorator market. They are fakes when sellers try to sell them as antiques.

 

Yeat I don't disagree with what everyone is saying. Mostly I'm just continuing the idea that I mentioned in the last thread, viz that there was some question about whether these marks were antique, so like I said I happen to see one of these marks the other day so I thought id add it to the discussion

 

Not a bad idea, if this is one of the searchable threads. Some are and some aren't. If someone's researching a piece they found "in the wild" and knows naught, having it posted as brand new isn't a bad idea.

 

Maybe next time you could include a link to any other thread you are referring to. I for one have no idea which previous thread it was, there are so many.
My reply would have been the same, but I would know your reference. Did anyone wonder about a Wong Lee item? They are what it says on the label, not antique and not dishwasher proof.

 

Not for food purposes is a dead giveaway, but some people are just that ignorant/innocent/unattentive. Some Americans think Antique is stuff from the 60s!

actually that thread we are talking about "Uw" or United Wilson marks and the one shown at the top of this thread is "wong Lee" and quite different so not the same. I guess I didnt remember it well.
