    Hey again

Something else I picked up, just cause I thought it was cool !!

There seems to be names dates everywhere, and photographer on back, doesn't match with what's signed on front

Title on front states Indian chief

    Any info appreciated

He is such a proud man. Great photo. I would contact the Spokane Camera Club to see if they can help you.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

If I'm reading this correctly, Mr. Sparkes, whose name is listed on the back as the photographer, passed away in 1996. (See last obit on this page: https://www.spokesman.com/stories/1996/apr/30/obituaries/ )

If the photo was exhibited in 1999, perhaps the person who exhibited it made a new print from the negative, and matted and framed it to exhibit. For people who know what they are doing with photography, making high-quality prints from negatives can be an art.

    Just one theory...

(Edit) my date error has been pointed out.

Good bit of digging there figtree, thanks, seems to tie up well

The dates(exhibited) on the back are 1967 and 1989, so in his lifetime, I guess

Great theory except that the date of the exhibition is in 1989.

Reminiscent of the Great Northern Railway photos and publicity associated with the Blackfeet/Blackfoot in Montana, e.g., Hileman photos (see avatar to left). Your photo was taken in 1967 per the backside, and that time is entirely consistent with the period regalia in the photo.

So I checked on "margaret rickman" in MT, and there was a lady who died in 2012 that had moved to Washington state in later life. Maiden name "madden". Couldn't locate a chief by that last name. If you have time, I'd pursue that general direction: "Go East, Young Man." towards Montana.

possibly, but why does the handwriting change... notice that "margaret cousin" seems to be added to "Rickmans" ... curious. Like multiple layers of 'annotations' about the photo.

Someone at exhibition added some info. It's the Rickmans that looks like the addition to me.

Just to confuse things even more, there's a name beneath the society of America sticker, beginning with Robert, and the Indian chief title

But maybe this is the date it was originally shown in public?

Does this show in photo? The chief's name may have been Robert _____.

The name underneath looks like Robert wick, which would fit in with the initials on the front

I think that John Sparks was Margaret Rickman's cousin.
I also think it is all the same handwriting. The "K" is the same in Spokane and in Rickman (backward c for second part of the K). N's have the same point in all of them. Dot for I is off to right and a slash in same direction. A is made the same with point where stem comes down

Agree. My guess: someone started to print the last name for legibility, then lapsed into cursive, which is the only way adults used to write.
