Your husband is super talented. What a fantastic rescue job! If only more people still put forth that sort of effort.

I want to go to the Long Room. Maybe I can set up a cot and a hotplate and just live there......

Here's a new one to add to the bookcase hoard: a repurposed music stand.

Not a common form. I can't find it's like on the internet at the moment.

The story on it is that it was purchased new ca. 1870 or so here in the midwest. I'm guessing it may be by Berkey & Gay of Grand Rapids; I've seen pieces they've done with this level of marquetry skill. There's an outside chance it could be from New York, i.e. Herter or Pottier & Stymus, but given the remoteness of the location in the 1870s that would have been ALOT of shipping!

Anyway, just sharing. In our house we're always in danger of "bookcase hoarding." :) P1010326.JPG P1010328.JPG

Congrats! That appears to be in pristine condition.

Hmmm. I've been stacking up book purchases lately maybe it is time to go shopping for a new (old) bookcase. They deserve better than to be sitting in stacks on the floor.

While I'm at it I need some more square footage too.:banghead:

Joe: While I have nothing to offer to equate with that gorgous thing above, I will tell you about a couple of bibliophile friends who were severely space deprived.

Four piles of books on the floor, spines facing out, at the corners of an imaginary rectangle; add one piece of plywood, old door, window, whatever works, put Heavy book in middle to anchor. Voila! One rather interesting coffee table.

Just remember to remove the coffee cups before you remove a book!

    Hey friends:

I know we don't do valuations because of too many variables. But (appraisal hats on) would a replacement value of $2K be too high for this? Less?

OK, the consensus on another site is around $2-$2.5K. Good to know my gut wasn't too far off.

I've got another bookshelf coming. Just need to clean it up,snap some pics, and then find a place to put it. It is walnut. Will likely be posting a thread in the furniture sub-forum sometime but will also post pics here.

I commented in the other thread, but it bears repeating: You hit this one out of the park! Beautiful 1940s mahogany bookcase, far better than most from that era. What books will you put in it?

I have some local history books that need a home and some antiques & collectables books that I've accumulated too. May use a shelf or two for art pottery.
