The tag was definitely made on an older typewriter, however, that alone won't confirm the date. The phone number might help. When did they stop using a three digit phone number in that area? It's odd that the quotes around the title also include the date. I'm assuming C. 1940 stands for circa 1940.

Yeah I thought that too mill cove, the circa suggests it was painted at an earlier date then tag

Just read that some small towns still had 3 digit numbers up till the 70s

It's a bit shocking that they still used only 3 digits that late. Maybe you can find out if that town listed on the label was one of those areas.

That was my first thought as well Frank, but I think now as komo said that the spitfire that is out of formation is the main focus point of the painting

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Sometimes yer 1st instincts r yr best....
the boy...is the only boy...and the only one in the light while all the other men are depicted in the shadows......even though from that vantage point the guys on the hay...and the one with the horse...should be lit up as well.........

So both the wayward plane and boy stand out as the primary focus of the design....

I guess we'll have to ask the artist !!! ;)

    That is what I thought.

My husband was a toddler during WWII in Japanese occupied Indonesia. His father was a navy pilot, flying mostly from Australia. They never saw each other during the war.
Whenever a plane flew over, my husband's mother would point at it and say, there is your daddy. He thought his daddy was a plane, and was bitterly disappointed when he saw his father in 1946. It was a man, and in uniform too, just like the Japanese had been.

I agree, the evacuee is the boy.
Many major cities evacuated their children to the countryside.
