Wow, that is stunning!.
I'll find my snake, he is very similar but smaller and only a very thin band of white. If I remember he's got a very odd fitting on the back so I wonder if he started life like this as part of another piece of jewellery. Now to find him.......I may be some time.....

Are the snakes designed to be removable?. The fittings on the back look unusual. Is the snake original to the piece do you think?

Yes, the back has 3 clever hooks to put pendants wit bale (the snake is original!) in same orientation as if they were on a chain.

Same date, 1850/1870.

It was cut from a single stone: banded agate cut parallel to the bands. The one shown in Houseful's photo was cut across the bands. It was primarily a Victorian thing. From what I've read, it seems to have been a good luck charm in that the wearer was being looked after.

 

I have a pretty Victorian agate twist brooch somewhere but can’t find it. Here’s an unmarked I believe silver bracelet, it has a couple of nibbles round two edges. The locket is brass and the other brooch a bit of a wreck as the pin is falling off and it’s chipped

 

I've decided I haven't been giving Agate the appreciation it deserves!
