Yeah, I've been working on that, but...

@Jeff Drum What color would you say the ribbon is?

Reminds me of Mexican retablos, which were painted on metal. I would look toward Mexico.

Anyone watch "Victoria" on PBS? Those epaulettes and facial hair remind me of Albert and the German royals.
    Valiant save of this artwork!

Oh yeah. Total junkie, always jumping up to get a better look at the cameos. They got better after the first season about not using completely anachronistic ones.

Also in agreement that it is likely tin. Copper would have oxidized and there would be residue most likely if Cu.

It occurs to me that the only red US military uniforms I can think or find are on members of the bands.

I'm starting to wonder if this is fraternal rather than military, but I will check Mexico.

The closest I've found is this:

Yeah, it IS a bellhop jacket. Shut up.

I do not think it's American. Unless it is band. Or fraternal order.

The only solid orange ribbon I can find is Dutch. But the badge for the orange ribbon doesn't match the one in the painting.

So, if it's not orange, that would be good to know. :joyful:

wasn't there a photographic process for pics being fixed on steel sheets ?
first thought was an advertising for cigarettes.

I wish I could get the pics up more quickly but I'm old school with outdoor light, a camera, USB connection, resizing, blah, blah. Here's the best closeups of the medal I could get. Indeed I assumed US since it was found here in Boston, but could be from anywhere. Seems painted not printed based on brush feel.

On my monitor, the ribbon appears orange - is that how it appears to you?

Yes, I would say it is a tawny orange in good outdoor light - not bright orange.

The "starburst" medal appears to be similar to one in the militaria forum.Prussian,German, etc.....

Unfortunately, it appears to be a popular choice for imperial/royal/state/etc orders.

http://numismatics.org is a great resource, but finding the exact one when guessing at the image... I'm not having much luck.

I went back to find that thread in connection with another we've had more recently & found it again this time by searching my own posts for 'flashbacks.'

That was one of those cases where person came on the board already unshakably convinced of the value of what he had, despite all evidence of poor & inauthentic quality.

I cannot find that button arrangement (sans frogging).

I cannot find that color ribbon with that style medal. Same for the top bar and suspender.

I cannot find that color shoulder belt with that buckle arrangement.

Because I came closer on all counts there, I suspect @2manybooks may have pointed in the right direction (Mexico or South America)...

    But no real matches.
