Follow up:

Thanks to Kiko and Debora I finally got in contact with Hugh Belsey, who has to be the world's authority on Gainsborough. Despite lag times and deadlines, I finally heard back from him.

Drumroll..........


It turns out that the painting is not by Gainsborough or Gainsborough Dupont at all, despite the blurb on the back of the painting. In Mr. Belsey's opinion, the painting is by Philip James de Loutherbourg, a French artist who was a friend and sitter to Gainsborough, who came to London in 1771, and was himself a painter of repute.

Not as much "repute," however, as Gainsborough himself. In case you were wondering, I priced some de Loutherbourg paintings, and my estimate would be that it's worth between $5K and $10K.

So, in part thanks to my friends on antiquers.com, I now have an authoritative opinion on who actually painted this landscape after all these years, and a general value. I still love the painting, which I plan on keeping.
