Thank you for these very helpful posts about nephrite and jadeite. I also got a message from long time member who suggested shinning a powerful penlight through the back and front would yield useful information. I do not have a penlight, so I it would take a few days to get one.

Thank you so very much for your post about the mark. I have tried and tried to figure out this mark. I searched for P Povtainy on google on
https://www.costumejewelrycollectors.com/vintage-costume-jewelry-research/costume-jewelry-marks" but nothing came up. You mentioned the mark may not be in English. That information is very helpful. I wonder if anyone would know what it might be. I even went so far as to scan this mark on a flatbed scanner with dpi of 2400 x 2400!! Any other suggestions would be appreciated!!

When I look at the images "J4" and "scanned2" using the "magnifier" tool in Mac 's Preview programl, it looks like POVTAINY..but I think I see a large letter T at the beginning.

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who commented on my green pin.
I contacted Kassoy --a wonderful gemology supply company "https://www.kassoy.com" about buying something to identify the stone. And they let me talk to their gemologist!! He was very very knowledgeable and really nice. He told me that I would need to go to a jewelry store to find out for sure what the stone is. So that is that. I haven't given up on figuring out the jeweler's mark though!!

I see a bad strike on the bar and IMO it says GERMANY.

Wow!! I think you are right!! Could you kindly tell me what this means-"bad strike on the bar," Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I have really been trying.

Across the top is blackened, and I was thinking of using a jewelry cloth to clean it up a bit in the hopes I could see it better but I am worried it may wear down or deface the marking.

Assuming pin is from Germany, does that provide any insight about the piece?
    Thank you

I still don't think this is from Germany, despite what the pin says. It's got all the characteristics of Chinese export.

Thank you for taking the time to post your knowledgeable information about it being a Chinese export. In your previous post you noted that the back is typical of Chinese export and that it is probably jadeite. If this is the case, would it be commonplace and worth less than $100? Thank you for your time.

Incredible this thread is reaching its 5th page :joyful:!
This one is bigger than yours, and rubylane isn't particularly cheap:rolleyes:

One can put something for sale and ask big $$$, but true value will still be the sold price:angelic:

    I think that's optimistic!

Here, it would be perhaps the 30 to 50 pounds mark?

100% Chinese Export jadeite jade in silver brooch. Period guesstimate 1930s. The coin symbols emphasize the auspicious nature of the jade. Mind you, most Chinese jewellery has an auspicious meaning.
    Agree.:)
China has been importing huge amounts of Burmese jadeite jade for centuries.
With its more pronounced and often bright colours it was the jade of choice for the 'nouveau' crowd when China's merchant class blossomed in the 18th and 19th centuries. They wanted to flaunt their riches, wear colourful clothing, and the less showy native nephrite jade just didn't do the job for them.

In Chinese culture the beautiful soft sheen and feel of nephrite still makes it the collector's and scholar's jade, whereas jadeite jade is for 'bling', and even considered gaudy by some.

I have a soft spot for nephrite too, so I am probably a gaudy scholar. My fellow students would probably have agreed, I think I was the only theology student in high heels.:joyful:

Aussie opals are home to me. I blame my Aussie childhood/teenage years.

:joyful: why a theologian FEMALE student shouldn't wear high heels?:bucktooth::rolleyes:
    Opals...
I don't remember if I posted this rescued big one:facepalm:
It does have crazing, lovely colors though, and above all a substantial size!

That's what I said! And I reminded them of the ca 1400 English mystic Margery Kempe, who always defended her love of of fine clothes.:angelic: Fun thing was, I knew who Margery Kempe was, and they didn't, so they felt a bit embarassed and shut up.:D When I got too sick to follow lectures and only went in when absolutely necessary, the sound of my heels in the corridors was like a signal for all the doors to open and for lecturers to welcome me back. They were lovely people. No dress sense, but lovely people.:playful:
You did, but no complaints from me for showing it again, it is a beauty.:kiss:
