Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

This one doesn't have a face on the helmet as the other two do. Otherwise, I don't know.

Athena is known for having a face on her helmet... She wears the head of Medusa on her aegis, but it may also be the face of Zeus? I can't remember. The one in the second post is Mars and Venus (Most cameos are Italian so Roman names are more accurate). They are a common pair as they were lovers.

The one the FB person posted was made in the 20th century and those started getting more loose with their depictions. Symbols got mashed up together, or left off, in the aim of making a pretty image. So without any symbols on the second woman, it's not certain. I would say Venus is likely since Love and War are a popular pairing.

Hello, I have some unmounted cameos which were in a job lot of jewellery I bought, this three graces one looks to be signed but I can't quite make it out...looks like Fiuli or Fuili or something like that? Can anyone advise me how to figure out a rough age please? Thank you. IMG_20250616_220058.jpg

I'm thinking it's fairly modern but we'll see what @Bronwen and @PepperAnna have to say. :)

Frulio is the name of the carver. I think they had a store in Florence and also in Rome.

This is a one-of-a-kind cameo of Epcot center's mascot, FIGMENT. The sphere is Spaceship earth. The triangle is Figment's ride, there's a monorail and Mickey balloons. The maker also sent me photos of each step of the process.

I hope you can see this. I see it fine. My brother couldn't see it at all.

Hello, all! I’ve lurked this thread a fair bit, and I’m finally pulling the trigger on posting. I got this cameo of the Annunciation of Mary for my mother. Sold as pinchbeck. Tube hinge with what I believe is a broken safety catch (though I’m not really certain what’s going on there). Haven't cleaned it because I'm inclined to let Mom decide if she wants to:

It’s signed, but I’m not familiar with the signature. Roschilt? Rosehilt? My sister and I are not even sure it’s an R and s we’re looking at. If anyone recognizes it, I'd love to find out more!

@Sunny G. , your question brought to mind this cameo signature thread, which used to be very active. https://www.antiquers.com/threads/cameo-signature-help-needed.38228/
I looked through the whole thing and didn't find any discussion about this signature. @PepperAnna is one of the members who has studied cameo signatures quite a bit. Maybe she has an idea? @Bronwen , too. She hasn't been here for a few weeks, but perhaps is coming back soon.

Luckily, my phone has a zoom function. :D That is really cool to see. A cartoon character is a bit different than a portrait, but you still get an idea of how they do broad strokes and find the negative space before going into the details. Thank you!

Welcome! :joyful: Thanks for bringing us a pretty to look at.

The broken rollover clasp is a replacement for the original c-clasp. Hopefully it still functions a little but I would still find some rubber earrings backs to slide on the stem to secure it if worn.

I would definitely clean it. The brown bits in the crevices are uhhhh somebody else's old skin cells. :yuck: Drop of dish soap in a bowl of water, soak, and then a light brushing with a clean toothbrush. Be especially gentle around the break. It'll brighten up the frame too. Then you can use a gold cleaning cloth to really make it shine. :D

I don't recognize the signature. I can take a look at my files later but i don't think I've seen that one at all. :(

Yes, I had taken a look through there as well and didn't see anything either, which compelled me to share! Interesting to see the process of identifying Silz as Schmoll; I have two signed by him--a fairly decent one with a broken pin and another that's less impressive and loose.

Thanks for explaining! It's still functional, but not particularly secure. I'll pass along the rubber earring back advice. I imagine it'll end up displayed rather than worn, but caution never hurts :)

Feel free to show us you or your mother's other baubles! We love to have a look even if you don't have any questions that need answering. :joyful:

I put earring backs on all my brooches but especially my cameos :nailbiting:. It has saved me on two occasions where a clasp got worked open. You can buy 20 for a few dollars on ebay if there are none lying around. :)
