Thank you Oliver. It looks like a print to me. The costumes were already worn prior to 1614, the date of the demolition of the first Hofpoort, so that would fit.
    The frame could be Spanish.

I know, not as good as a painting.:(
It is an attractive piece though, nice frame.
I have no idea of prices, only general background of objects, culture, etc.
We don't generally give valuations here, but if someone finds something similar online, they will give a link. Remember, values and prices vary from place to place, country to country, and difference of venues.

If it is indeed a print, you essentially paid that for the frame and the mirror.:nailbiting: I like the frame, but personally wouldn't pay that much for it. I have no idea of prices for these where you are.

Let's wait if the others agree that it is a print.

I'm changing my vote to "painting with a bad application of varnish." :joyful:

Still hard to evaluate because of the glare, but that's where I'm landing.

I know nothing about why anyone would need a "hidden mirror" (I don't find the nun suggestion convincing) or the frame origin.

What are the dimensions? (height / width)

Neither do I. A nun would probably have a religious painting, not a painting of a harbour tower in a Protestant city.;)

Initially, I was thinking "not that old," but now I'm wondering if the front piece is substantially older than the back.

But so not my area. One of the furniture people might have thoughts.

Larger than I initially thought (for the Americans: 31.5" x 16.75").

Is the front piece joined planks/boards or one piece of wood?

I notice the edges of the mirror aren't bevelled, the way old mirrors are, and the mirror doesn't look antique. Maybe a former owner wanted an a choice of both a nice image and a mirror, depending on the situation.

I think the back is a replacement. And since it is attached using screws, I wonder how hard it would be to detach and see what the back of the front piece looks. :woot:

But I am not a furniture person and seeing it would not enlighten me. I'm just curious.

It seems strange that the decorated front of the frame is hollow at the back, and it looks filled with some substance.

Still not a furniture person, but that really looks like a molded thing, not a carved thing.
