Carved? Soapstone? Box

This box is some kind of stone, maybe soapstone or onyx, about 3 1/2 inches wide. I've done a lot of searching and not found anything like this. The closest things seemed to be soapstone.

So, what kind of stone, and what is the motif? My first reaction was Egyptian, but then I thought maybe South American.

Any help, search terms appreciated.

 

Thanks INH. Just did a quick search of Philippine boxes. Most were wood, didn't see anything too similar.
