I have no idea when they where made the pony express was in the 1860’s and Ed Jones company didn’t start making badges till 1898 so that’s where my Confusion comes from and that’s why I’m here to see if anybody else might know more than I do …if the pony express wasn’t around in the 1890’s why would the badges be made unless they are reproduced by Ed jones but I didn’t think Ed Jones would make a Reproduction of a badge…hard to explain what I’m asking for I guess.

These both have a type of safety clasp that wasn't in use until the 20th century.

The Pony Express existed for only a year and a half in 1860 and 1861. What's necessary to know is when the Ed. Jones Co. was in operation. Old-timey stuff was all the rage among the 1960s-'70s youth culture, so repro (or fantasy) badges might've been a hit in those more recent decades.

Looks like fantasy pieces to me, likely made in the 1960s.

The patina on those badges looks kind of odd compared to badges of similar era I've seen. You would expect a lot more uneven color with scratches, bangs, and discoloration if these were ever used.

Sorry for reviving this thread after a few years, but I was looking into my Postal badges, and came across this post. Here is what I have. Don't know if it's a repro or not, but it is pretty heavy (1.7 oz), and has a clasp that looks kinda like a spring-loaded safety pin. There are no maker's marks that I can see on the back. You can see that the top of the eagle and the pony/rider have been stamped through from the back, while the other details on the front are stamped from the front.

I don't know if it's authentic or not, just more pics for comparison!

Pretty much. I don't believe that mine is authentic or anything- if they HAD badges. The Pony Express wasn't around very long, and I would doubt that they ever got organized enough to do more than the basic mission of moving the mail.

According to their web site, the Ed Jones Co. dates to 1898. And according to the internet, there is no evidence that Pony Express messengers wore badges.
