    Oh my, Sarah Coventry MUST have had one of these at some time, because I clearly remember my mother showing me how it was used. Or she was practicing on me before a "party" (Sarah Cov was sold through home parties) ... as young girls, my sister and I were always up for helping with her jewelry party practice.

    These were definitely a thing in the mid-1960s. And @evelyb30 was spot on with pinning it to your blouse. It was so you could have the decorative bit attractively stuck wherever you wanted it, gravity be damned.

    With longer necklaces, there was even the opportunity for fancy draping.

    It's not the same as OP, because the brooch is not a clasp & the necklace can be worn without it, but they are being sold as a set that allows for the same look.
