komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Then ,,,, yes,,,,I apologize for not reading all the posts clearly......and yours in particular....but in truth I came to my conclusion on my own..

So....do we still like it for amber?

I had/have no doubt of that.

I still do. It's my best shot at this stage. Would like to know results of a UV examination. :)

No can do for the ring so far as amber. It does not light up under black light. Here’s some close ups of the locket. I think the locket is that bog material. It’s not true black, more of a deep brown. EE76E82F-D306-4363-92DF-BB875C21941B.jpeg 6A73DF0A-9612-4A99-AD13-281FD25C6E33.jpeg And this last one is under magnification.

I've got a locket on a bracelet that's very similar. It was the subject of a lengthy thread a fair while ago. I'll see if I can find it. I've also got another similar one I will dig out.

Does it reflect the purple light back or absorb it & stay looking close to the same color it is under normal lighting?

I'm not sure a nearly-black brown color rules out jet or indicates bog oak. The few pieces of bog oak I have had in my hand have been sort of a soft black, not brown. Have you tried the test for jet by rubbing it vigorously against fabric to see if it will generate static electricity?

This unusual bracelet combines a carved bog oak central medallion with faceted jet panels for links. You can see that they take a different finish:

As mentioned earlier, Vulcanite-type materials tend to turn brown with time. Maybe this locket has lived a sheltered life.

As I have said many times before, I hate black things! For this very reason, the difficulty of determining from photos that are often not very good because difficult to take which of the several black materials used in jewellery a given item is. Having the other clues provided by touch & smell is far preferable than visuals only.

So called "bog oak" can be from oak,yew and pine trees and the wood can be black, brown and yellow.

I kept thinking, the ring reminded me of something, but just couldn't remember. Now I do. (lightbulb!)
As a child I used to have a celluloid cross on my bedroom door. It was exactly the same colour as your ring, it had flower molding that had the same look, and also that 'dusty' effect in the crevices.
Although amber can have cracks, the cracks on your ring look more like celluloid to me. So I think your guess was right, celluloid for the ring.

A while back, I saw another (plain; no cameo) bog oak locket for sale. It had a similar carved design on the inside.
