Maybe it feels that way because you're now less likely to bother dealing with foolishness. :playful:

Years ago my Dad had the opposite problem. He was going by a house that had a garage sale (my Dad wasn't one to frequent garage sales) and he saw an item that he wanted. He told the people that he hadn't any money on him -- he wasn't haggling on price -- so would they hold it for a short time while he went home to get the money? They said yes. My Dad was as good as his word and went back with money asap, but in the meantime they sold it. So, it does work both ways sometimes.

I think general assholery has increased markedly since Covid.

I'm a daily bicycle commuter with a long commute. In that context at least, assholery is dramatically more than it was five years ago.

(And also people texting while driving... and marijuana clouds coming from moving cars... and 'zombies' zonked on drugs staggering along the bike path.... and .... and... but I digress. :hungover: )

Indeed. I,who was always polite to a fault, find as I age that the mask slips more and more. Its hard to bother when so many have lost even the most basic manners.

Haaa I always try to think "I must have been this clueless/annoying when I was X age." or "When I'm that person's age I might well be over things too." so I can give others some grace. But there's a limit!

My husband assures me we we're Not Like That.

But age changes your perception of the past and yourself!

The absence of religion and parenting has generated what we have to deal with today.

My take is that it is all about parenting. Personal responsibility for parents and their kids is lost nowadays for many.
Many adults just were not meant to have kids.

I just said exactly this while we were out on Tuesday night- a "woman" (mayyyybe 20) had a daughter, turning and facing our booth non-stop, coughing and not covering mouth, acting ridiculous, "mother" hardly did anything. When I was raising my kids, if they were acting up, we either left the place, or, I took the problem child to the car. The respect for others is simply gone. They now expect YOU to be more accommodating to THEM!

the Muslims seem to have a tremendous hold of their religion , & with a bevy of children, also seen to have parenting covered as well.

seems like many, treat kids as toys.....to be played with and then left in their rooms with social media devices...

An acquaintence of mine has a daughter and at the time the daughter was about 16. The father insistied on making toast for her. Apparently he thought he needs to do it for her. I shook my head in disbelief that he thought this was necessary,

I was a education assistant for my career and worked with kids with special needs and designations such as autism and Down's, etc. But really, I worked with all the kids in the classrooms and in all there were polite and well-behaved as well as the other side. People outside the education biz would ask me, "What's wrong with kids today?" My stock answer was "97% of the time it's parenting." Bit tongue-in-cheek, but instead of Lamaze classes to prepare parents for childbirth, there should be parenting lessons to prepare them for raising their child. I am retired and don't miss the work, but I miss the kids all the time.

And I am a high school teacher (this is year 28!). I will second two comments in this thread--in my opinion the advent of social media, and then exacerbated by covid lockdowns / isolation, has made people in general more insular, more self-focused, and, in a number of ways, more oblivious.

I think most of us on antiquers formed our social expectations in person, before social media began to shape social interaction, and for that reason there's a pleasant and respectful (that is to say, normal!) tone and community here. Of course, today's young parents themselves grew up online and so in some ways, the rules of social media are becoming the rules for all social interaction. It's a loss.

And as a fellow educator with kentworld above, 97% of all problems I've ever had as a teacher have been with adults. It's almost never the kids.

And those 97% are the reasons a lot of teachers are getting out of teaching. (sigh)

And some teachers should be kicked out of these colleges for their behavior.
    And sent to jail.
