SHIPPING! I have ALWAYS thought it odd that i have to arrange shipping, even from retail sellers/dealers. I can't think of another household product that makes you do that.
I just bought a small old table at the americana sales in NYC and, THAT'S RIGHT! I got my shipper on my cell phone along with the BOL (bill of lading), Authorization, USHIP thingy and several other items, ALL that for a small table.
NEWS FLASH: NO ONE is going to put up with that in today's world unless you are dedicated or nuts & probably both!

And if you put a USB port in an antique nightstand, does that improve your odds?

I think inh is suggesting facilitating today's habits and thus luring the ikea crowd into buying antique furniture.;)

LOL, well, you know, I really doubt many folks even know what a BOL is, I know I didn't and, that's just ONE of the many items you need to arrange if your plan is to buy old furniture very far out of your zip code.
It's a VERY LARGE pain to do all this and just one of the various issues left over from the "glory days".
It's 2019 kidz, you just ain't gonna sell much old furniture this way, TRUST ME!

Hmmmm, I wouldn't bet my life on that one! :hilarious:

The way things are today in the antique furniture world? NOT A CHANCE! As far as IKEA clients are concerned, as soon as you start talking a foreign language to them like "BOL", antique furniture can drop dead! Which it pretty much has. :singing:

Well the man came for my wardrobe, he said he was a Triple Wardrobe dealer,

    Who knew.,

I helped him dismantle it and load it, he told me it was Victorian, 1880 to be precise,

again , who knew.I thought it was late Edwardian or even 20's

He said he was taking it the next day upto a dealers in Harrogate and sell it as it was , in bits.

So, I got it for nothing and made £120. for around a couple of hours of my time.

He has travelled 200 miles round trip and paid £120 and is selling it on at a profit.

I wonder who will buy it after it has exchanged hands 3 times.

Is Deco the exception? It seems the local antique stores my way are selling authentic Art Deco furniture fairly successfully.

I have a house full of antique and vintage furniture, and I enjoy bringing home antique chairs, but it seems that some older pieces do have functional problems for modern use. Dedicated vanity tables are one example. Some can be repurposed but they are not really good substitutes for a desk. Also, due to nutrition etc. people were just smaller 100 years ago, so what might have seemed like a fairly large chair or desk then is not so big now. A few years back I almost purchased a gorgeous carved desk from the 1910s-1920s, but the bottom of the middle drawer actually hit the top of my legs. The proportions were just too small for me to sit comfortably at it. I found that post-war desks were much larger, and I ended up buying a desk from the early 1960s. On the flip side, some really large pieces such as wardrobes and armoires (needed then due to lack of closets) are too big for many houses. Fewer homes are being built with formal dining rooms, so the interesting and beautifully-crafted buffets, sideboards and cabinets may have nowhere to go. Likewise with hall trees and large baker’s racks...

I think it is ironic that someone who asked for assistance in developing a phone app for antiques was disappeared from this forum. Many young people live on the phones, and use apps for everything. Apps could enhance the marketability of antiques by exposing new people to the beauty of old things. I speak from experience. I am not young, but I must have a hundred apps on my phone. I use them for everything. I agree with @James Conrad. The antique world must modernize their approach.

    Yes amazing isn't it :hilarious:
He identified most of my other furniture correctly but I think he's wrong on the wardrobe, but hey, its gone and I have a lot more room and some dosh.
He even wanted to buy that 2 metre cotton print Indonesian Muslim battle scene I showed months ago, I have it hanging on a wall and forgot about it.
Thing is he only brought the exact amount of £120 with him for the wardrobe, he didn't have a penny more :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:
