Everyone and their dog thinks that grandma's antique set from Hong Kong is made of ivory and worth a billion dollars.

99% of the time it's bone or plastic. I don't think I've ever seen a real ivory set, ever. Not even photos of one.

I just bought one set (about a week ago), and sold another one yesterday. I'll have to upload photos of the set I bought.

Here is the set I just inherited from my parents. Bamboo backed ivory as far as I know... At least that is what I was told by my parents

I'm sure that many people where duped over the years... I'm never going to sell it... I just happened across the thread. Nothing will ever replace the memory of playing with the set with my mom and dad

I'm one of them  Thought I had bought an antique set, but it was hardly vintage. But I manage to re-sell it quickly (with fair info), and with a small profit, so the story ended well
But there are many seller who genuinely think that it's ivory, while most of the times it's bone. And now with the "help" of AI image searches, probably even more people will think they have an antique set with ivory...

Here is a better representation of the set... I know from family photos that the set was used as far back as the early 60's. The set was gifted to my mother when she graduated from college. Otherwise I know little about the origins of it.

Definitely not ivory, or bone. It'll be some variety of plastic. Most likely the Urea formaldehyde, going by the colour.

Thanks for the information. I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I had received. Now the set is mine I will have to try finding a couple people in my area that would be willing to play. It's been years since I've played.

It looks like a pretty standard 144-piece Chinese set, from the 60s, as you say, which would make sense. Certainly still very usable. Best of luck with playing!!
