r2.jpg r1.jpg r4.jpg r3.jpg This was bought in France, several years ago - just found it in a box! It was gilded once, details are on the photos. The cast mark underneath intrigues me.
We are having debates in the house - I say late early 19th century. Other opinions vary from mid 18th to 20th century! Any ideas, please?

    Many thanks.

Didn't we just see that tavern scene on another piece?

It is pretty, but I must say, I have never seen a reliquaire that looked like a jewellery casket and had a tavern scene on it.

Déposé means it was legally registered.

Here's the original. 'Halt at an Inn.' Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. c. 1862-1863. In The Wallace Collection.

Ok, I got over my confusion.:playful:

The girl's costume and the timber frame building in the painting look like it could be situated in the Basque country.
Which doesn't mean the casket is, just the subject of the painting. They used scenes from famous paintings to decorate these jewellery caskets. The casket was probably made in the late 19th century.

Bought as a "reliquaire", I believe, but all those I've seen before were glass. Thank you for your comment, helpful.
