They're my favourite. I hope to be able to photograph one of my antique snake rings which has a rose cut diamond in the top of the head (poor thing). If I manage to, I will post it.

Nice collection! The emerald cut is divine! And it is a generous size, too.
I'm curious about the five stone emerald cut diamond ring to the left.
Tell me about that one. The middle stone is very interesting!

    OK, I'll play :)
Not antique ... but almost! circa 1920's - 1930's transitional cut diamonds in platinum. It was love at first sight!
Yikes- I see it needs a bath.

This is the one that started the thread by accident. I found this in a community tag sale. Early 1920s platinum filigree with a half carat or so stone. Not a mark to its name. DSCF3406.JPG DSCF3408.JPG

Thank you :) Not off the top of my head. They're in the appraisal ... which is filed ... somewhere:rolleyes:. If I'm remembering correctly, the center stone is just over 1¾ carats.

does it distinguish real diamonds from synthetic/artificial ones?

Dark spots. Dark spots in a diamond bring the value down. Personally I wouldn't care in an old ring, but insurance guys do. It does help to clean the stone before looking, so you don't mistake schmutz for off colors. If a stone can't be called by a color and it's not white, that hurts it. Other inclusions. A mark that says CZ...(LOL) A 10x loupe is the standard for looking at stones, so imperfections that don't show up under that don't count.

Well........I'm no expert, just a long time, jewelry crazed, old lady.
But I know a little! First, clean your diamonds really good in warm water and mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush. Now with the loupe, look in them for inclusions. Some are called feathers and some are called needles, because that's what they look like. Also look for black carbon specks. If you see any of these, then you probably have real diamonds. CZs will have no inclusions.
Now to spot Old Europeans, they will be mostly round, and almost always have an open, or flat culet. That's a tiny flat facet at the pointy bottom of the gem.
Old Mine cuts will be squarish, or cushion shaped, with the same flat culet facet.
Below, see the definitions of Old Mine and Old Euro cuts.
