    Ma had a record cupboard like that. It looks elm to me.

    holes are 16 inches tall by 10 inches deep. I would think documents not records. An interesting desk top piece reminiscent of pigeonholed secretary. maybe just a large stationary cabinet or possibly custom made for a student to take off to school. I've never seen one quite like it.

    Do think documents rather than records. Looks mid to late 19th century. Would like to see drawer construction. Wood looks beech to me. Elm is usually more figured and with more color variation.
