Back in the late 1960s it was illegal to have anything in your car that could be used as a weapon. I was working in a very bad neighborhood and needed some sort protection. I used an old phone receiver with the cord stuck into the ashtray. I figured it would give me some kind of protection.
I got off work one morning and every car parked on the street was broken into except mine. I guess the crooks saw the phone receiver and thought my car was a police car.

Where I live, here in Australia - owning stuff like clubs, batons, truncheons and pocketknives do not, as far as I know, require any sort of paperwork or certificates.

However, you do need a permit (an "edged weapons license", I believe it's called) to sell, or own stuff like bayonets, hunting knives, and swords. Like - you CAN bid on, and purchase - antique swords and bayonets at auction here in Australia - but to pay for it and take it away with you if you win it - you have to produce paperwork showing that you're permitted to own and/or sell them. Auction-houses list this condition of sale in their documentation before each auction.

And if you do sell them, obviously you can only sell them to people who also carry edged-weapons licenses.

Apparently, the permits pretty easy to get, according to a friend of mine who collects edged weapons, but I've never bothered to apply for one because the chances of me ever owning any bayonets is pretty slim.
