Bone huh. They got the ivory-colored bit right, but I see busted bubbles in more ways than one.

I have a nice little sailing ship on a piece about 1/2” x 1” that I bought in Hawaii about ‘73. It was work done by the guy JFK collected.
I think it came in a box with a certificate. Where do I stand with that?

Congratulations; it's yours. I don't know what Washington State law is on ivory, but around here I'd put it on a shelf and dust it.

At least you don't need to wonder whether you should report it to eBay. It's not even good as fakes go.

Primm and Propper May all your days be as interesting as mine...

eBay UK rejected one of my listing titles containing the word "Faux Ivory" just last week.

You can list tagua nut, celluloid, etc, but if you call it ivory... lookout. If it's the "french ivory" stuff I'd list it as French Celluloid and it'll get found. People have had ivory sweaters yanked, and probably ivory knitting yarn. The bots aren't very bright. Ox bone will also get red-flagged, even if it's bone from an ox.

    Was it faux?

Someone who was selling it for me had trouble with eBay US over a pendant that incorporated an African figure carved in some kind of cattle bone. At the time, 'cow bone' was what some sellers were using for things that really were ivory. Apparently eBay caught on to that. When my friend protested that piece really was cow bone, they advised her that she could use 'bovine bone'.

Searches for 'Dieppe' or sometimes for 'carved natural material' are likely to turn up ivory items. My favorites are the sellers who tiptoe around in their description & title when piece is not ivory.

Maybe they are the ones that should be poached.
