I have a couple of smoking jackets; I've been known to wear them to church.(LOL) I'm allergic to tobacco smoke, but not to fancy fabrics.

Mine aren't quite that decorative. (Clark Gable was that, in spades)

I always thought gentleman's smoking jackets were about 3/4 length and wrap around? Full-length robes were bathrobes or dressing gowns. I think Clark Gable is in a dressing gown (and looks sooooo stylish!) and the second gentleman is in a 3 piece suit and just happens to be smoking. Sherlock Holmes made the smoking jacket popular although it had existed a century earlier. I found the style differences outlined in Everyday Fashions, 1909-1920, as Pictured in Sears Catalogs, but couldn't post a link.

My Aunt Willa had a huge crush on Valentino. I have a scrapbook, a copy of a book of poetry he wrote and somewhere a photo she sent for.

The ones I have are 50s and my dad's from the late 40s (he never smoked or wore it, but some uncle thought he ought to have one) and they're all shorter. I think the long ones were for over one's pajamas. The second guy is in a smoking jacket too, note the collar, but it might be a whole smoking suit.

Yes, it was described as a "smoking suit" - something I'd never heard of so I put it up!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

As @Bev aka thelmasstuff subtly implied, the man smoking a pipe in the second photo is Rudolph Valentino.
